what the cat dragged in: 猫经常拖进来的东西是死老鼠或死鸟之类的让人看了不是很舒服的东西。这个短语借用这个情景联想，形容某个看起来不太健康、精神气色不太好的人走进了某处。

come apart at the seams: 原意指的是衣服在缝线出分开。常用来指由于无法处理或应付某种情况，某人或某事濒临崩溃。

look washed-out: 指某人看起来不太健康，脸色苍白。

sore: 疼痛，尤指受伤、感染或过度锻炼引起的。

build up: 增加或增强。
