Angelina Jolie has dethroned Oprah Winfrey as the world's most powerful celebrity, according to an annuAl list compiled by business magazine Forbes.
Winfrey, the US television star, topped the list for the previous two years and remains its highest earner, making $275 million in the past 12 months. However, she is relegated to second place this year by Jolie, 34, the Hollywood actress, human rights campaigner and mother-of-six.
The star power of British celebrities appears to be on the wane. Keira Knightley, Gordon Ramsay and JK Rowling have dropped out of the top 100 rankings altogether, while last year's highest placed Briton, David Beckham, has slipped from fifth to 28th.
Forbes' Celebrity 100 power rankings are based on a combination of earning power and media exposure. Jolie and her partner, Brad Pitt, are the most photographed couple in the world. Her $27 million earnings in the past year included a $14 million magazine deal for exclusive rights to the first pictures of the couple's twins, Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline, who were born in August. Pitt is ranked in ninth place, one spot behind his former wife, Jennifer Aniston.
"In addition to nearly doubling her earnings in the past year, Angelina Jolie is the most famous star on the planet. She is in the dialogue of popular culture nearly every day - for her acting, for her relationship with Brad Pitt, for her children and for her philanthrophic endeavours. All of this exposure leads to an extremely powerful celebrity brand," Forbes said.
The annual power list is dominated by women this year, with four out of the top five placings occupied by female stars. Madonna is third thanks to her world tour and the column inches generated by two recent events in her life: her divorce from Guy Ritchie and her thwarted attempt to adopt a second child from Malawi. Beyonce, the US singer, is fourth.
Tiger Woods is the highest ranked male celebrity, in fifth place. According to the magazine, the golfer remains the highest-paid sports star in the world. Bruce Springsteen, who will headline the Glastonbury Festival later this month, director Steven Spielberg and basketball player Kobe Bryant complete the top 10.
Coldplay are the highest ranked British entries, in 15th place thanks to their recent album, tour and multiple Grammy wins. Simon Cowell, the Britain's Got Talent judge and entertainment svengali, is in 25th place, with earnings of $75 million over the last 12 months.
Other Britons in the list are Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe (70), actor Hugh Laurie (94) and supermodel Kate Moss (97). Laurie makes his debut on the list after five series as the star of House, the US medical drama.
US President Barack Obama is the first sitting head of state to appear on the list, which has been published annually since 1999.
