英文也能“叠字”？超萌表达来袭！

今天来看妙趣横生的叠声词。

1. chit-chat

意思是“聊天，闲谈，闲聊”。

"What did you talk about?" "Oh, just chit-chat."

“你们在说什么？”“噢，闲聊而已。”

2. flip-flop

本意是人字拖鞋，另外，还有名词和动词表达，形容彻底改变计划。

The president's flip-flops on taxes made him appear indecisive.

总统在税收问题上的决定临场变卦使他看起来有些优柔寡断。

He seemed so sure of his decision, how could he flip-flop so dramatically now?

他似乎对自己的决定非常肯定，现在怎么会戏剧性地改变立场呢？

3. wishy-washy

这个表达是形容词，意思都不太好“颜色浅的；软弱无力的；优柔寡断的；不坚定的；无特色的”。

The candidate gave a few unsatisfactory wishy-washy answers.

候选人的回答软弱无力，不能令人满意。

4. shilly-shally

这个词是动词，表示“动摇不定；犹豫不决”。例句：

Stop shilly-shallying and make a decision now!

别再犹豫了，现在就作决定吧！

5. yada yada yada

大概就是“此处省略一万字”吧，意思是“之类的，等等”，用于表示无聊的讲话。

His new girlfriend is attractive, funny, smart, yada yada yada.

他的新女友有魅力、有趣、聪明，等等等等。

如果是正式语境里表示“之类的”，可以说so on and so forth或者直接就是我们最常见的so on：等等schools, colleges, and so on学校、学院等等。

6. win-win

做形容词，表示“双赢的”：

Flexible working hours are a win-win situation for employers and employees.

灵活的工作时间对于雇主和雇员来说是双赢的。

反义词就是lose-lose，意思是“对各方都不好的”，比如：

​​​​​​​He said that going ahead with the strike would be a lose-lose situation for all concerned.

他说如果罢工举行的话，对各方来说都无益处。

也可以是名词，win-win，形容双赢的结果，皆大欢喜的结果。

7. chit-chat

是名词，形容“闲聊；闲言碎语”，和gossip意思差不多：

我讨厌这些无聊的流言蜚语。

8. criss-cross

是动词，形容（在…上）纵横交错，（在…上）交叉运动。

This area of the city is criss-crossed by railway lines.

该城市的这个地区铁路线纵横交错。

9. knick-knack

通常是复数形式，可以说nick-nack。尤指房子里的“小装饰物，小摆设”。

The shelves were covered with ornaments and useless knick-knacks.

架子上满是装饰品和一些无用的小玩意儿。

10. nitty-gritty

形容“基本事实；本质”。
