President Barack Obama said Monday he has yet to order military engagement in Syria but that decision would change if the U.S. determines the government of President Bashar al-Assad is moving toward using chemical weapons.

'A red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moved around or being utilized,' Mr. Obama said during an impromptu news conference at the White House. 'That would change my calculations significantly.'

Mr. Obama said the U.S. is 'monitoring that situation very carefully' and has 'put together a range of contingency plans.'

The use of chemical weapons, he said, is only a concern not within Syria but also would impact the U.S. and its close allies in the region, including Israel.

Mr. Obama said the U.S. continues to provide humanitarian assistance to Syria and is in close consultation with the opposition about a government transition.

In terms of his and international community's calls for Mr. Assad to step down, he was pessimistic, saying: 'At this point the likelihood of a soft landing seems pretty distant.'
