Cheers in Taiwan over last week’s phone call between President Tsai Ing-wen and Donald Trump have faded into worries that the US president-elect may be using the island’s 23m people as a bargaining chip in negotiations with Beijing.

Mr Trump’s statement — I don’t know why we have to be bound by the One China policy unless we make a deal with China on other things — played into fears on the island that Ms Tsai’s apparent victory in winning a show of support for Taiwan could backfire if it resulted in the island losing its de facto independence.

As Beijing warned any revision of the policy by Mr Trump would torpedo China-US co-operation, Taipei tried to downplay the comments, with the president’s office refusing to make a statement.

But Huang Guo-chang, a newly elected lawmaker from Taiwan’s minority New Power Party who has met twice with Trump aide Stephen Yates, said: Trump is a pragmatist.

And I want him to know that the US can truly benefit if they treat us as an ally instead of a bargaining chip.

Mr Yates helped organise last week’s call.

If Mr Trump treated Taiwan as a tool to reach other policy goals, Mr Huang said, other countries will start to question the rightfulness of other actions the US has taken.

Taiwanese student activists last week warned in a Washington Post op-ed that Americans — liberal, conservative and otherwise — would do well to stop using Taiwan as a tool to score political points at home or against China, and instead examine their commitments to human rights, freedom and democracy.

This aerial sabre-rattling, followed by Mr Trump’s broadside against nearly four decades of US policy in Asia, led Taiwan’s opposition Kuomintang (KMT) to urge stability.

Many of Ms Tsai’s supporters still believe raising the stakes is the only route for survival as a nation.

Taipei voter You Su-ling, 50, said she felt happy but fearful following the phone call.

Taiwanese had learnt to shrug off threats of invasion, she said, but worried about the impact of political tensions on Taiwanese businesses investing in the mainland.
